Automatic Translation Option

Overview

• As the number of foreign parents who are not familiar with Japanese increases, conducting PTA or parent-teacher communications and coordinating volunteer activities solely in Japanese becomes limiting.
• Translating everything manually into English or other languages is time-consuming.
• To address this, Miley PTA provides an automatic translation feature.
• Japanese original text is automatically translated into English, and English or other foreign languages are automatically translated into Japanese.
• The automatic translation feature uses Google Cloud Translation.

How the translation works (diagram)

Texts subject to translation

• Info post contents
• Reply comments to Info posts (surveys, forms, schedule adjustments, polls, attendance checks)
• Contact to School posts
• Chat room messages (automatic translation must be enabled per chat room; default is OFF)
• Accounting post contents
• Reservation item contents
• Reservation comments
• Inquiries to administrators

Texts not subject to translation

• Proper nouns are excluded because machine translation may not produce the expected result.
• Examples of excluded items:
  • Profile information (profile name, phonetic reading, tags)
  • Group names
  • Chat room names

Tips for better results

Add phonetic reading for proper nouns

Although machine translation has improved with AI, it still struggles with proper nouns. Adding phonetic reading can produce better translation results. For example:

• ✖️ 放出駅 → Release Station
• ◎ 放出(はなてん)駅 → Hanaten Station

Avoid abbreviations

Abbreviations are often difficult for machine translation. Avoid using abbreviations in texts that require translation.

• ✖️ 市P連 → City P Ren
• ◎ xxx市 PTA連合会 → xxx City PTA Federation
